When I the initial Prospect Spotlight of the Cubs’ Jaxon Wiggins before the season, he was recovering from an elbow injury. He didn’t pitch much in 2025, as he missed multiple weeks, but when he did pitch, he was solid, posting a 2.19 ERA across 78 innings.

Wiggins advanced across three levels of the minors in 2025, ending the year with a promotion to Triple-A Iowa in September. He made 3 starts at Triple-A to end the year, going 0-2 with a 4.66 ERA across just 9.2 innings. However, a guy who managed 11 Ks/9 in 2025 did still have his swing and miss stuff, notching 14 strikeouts in that 3-game span. He began 2026 where he ended it, and the results were largely the same. He lasted just two more starts in Iowa, limping to a 5.63 ERA in just 8 innings.

Still recovering from his injury (reminder: he also had Tommy John surgery in 2023), he missed most of April and all of May due to elbow inflammation, before returning in June. He made one rehab start with the ACL Cubs, allowing 3 hits and an earned run in two innings. He settled in nicely in High-A South Bend, though, allowing just 5 hits and striking out 7 across 7.1 innings, while holding opposing batters to a .208 average.

Despite missing a good chunk of time so far in 2026, it looks like Jaxon Wiggins is slowly building up his strength. His fastball is back up to 96 MPH, and his 12-6 curveball looks crisp. We had previously reported that pitch was lagging behind the rest of his repitiore, but it’s looking like a good strikeout weapon during his rehab. Wiggins dropped from the #58 overall prospect in 2025 according to MLB.com to #92 in 2026, but his is still Chicago’s top pitching prospect, which is an area of need for the organization in the immediate future, with the injuries ravaging their starting staff at the big league level.

Due to his injury recovery, I’m not saying Jaxon Wiggins will be at Wrigley anytime soon, but he should definitely factor into their plans in 2027 and beyond. If the big league club decides to buy at the deadline though, they’ll be in desperate need of MLB starters, and Wiggins is the team’s #3 prospect, so there IS a better than decent chance that a future asset like Wiggins could be on the move come time for the Trade Deadline.
