If you’ve followed this blog over the last couple of months, you’ll know that this is my second consecutive series centered around MLB teams. A few times in this series, I have highlighted prospects that I had also called out in that team’s 2026 preview. However, this time, I switched it up. In the Phillies 2026 Preview, I mentioned Andrew Painter. I’m a big fan of his and think he’ll be one of the best prospects to watch this coming season, I want to pivot to another Phillies farm hand: top prospect Aidan Miller.
When Miller was drafted in the 1st round in 2023, there was a veteran Phillies scout that said that he was the best offensive player they’ve drafted since Mike Schmidt in 1971. That’s high praise, given that Schmidt is both a beloved member of Phillies lore and one of the best defensive players to ever play his position.
Miller is a natural shortstop, and I don’t think he has Schmidt defensive potential, but he’s shown improved ability in the field. He’s versatile with the glove, so he may end up moving to second or third long-term, especially with Trea Turner occupying the 6 in Philly for the foreseeable future.
Miller has average speed but runs well and has great instincts on the base paths, stealing 59 bags in 2025. He has plus raw power and puts it together with outstanding plate discipline and pitch recognition. He hits for power without letting his strikeout rate rise, or his walk rate fall.
Aidan Miller hits all the right notes going into 2026. For a team that is used to making a splash in the trade and free agent markets, the Phillies may have the future of their organization in their own pipeline. With Miller in the field and Andrew Painter on the mound, Philadelphia has quite the cornerstone for the future.
Whether he makes the Opening day roster remains to be seen, but it likely won’t be long. I imagine that Miller will break into the Big Leagues at second, and they’ll move Bryson Stott around. Given Stott’s defensive versatility and range, I can’t imagine it would be too hard for him to move into the outfield.
Some have comped Aidan Miller to Alex Bregman, and while I struggled to come up with my own comp, I realized that Bregman hit the nail on the head. Great plate discipline, power and plus defensive skills. If he becomes half the on-field leader or Gold Glove winner that Bregman has become, Phillies fans will be thrilled.
