The Miami Marlins have had a long history of developing top-level pitching talent: Sandy Alcantara, Josh Beckett, Jose Fernandez, and Josh Johnson just to name a few. The Fish have two left-handed pitching prospects that rank in the Top 40 in the MLB Top 100: roommates Thomas White (#17) and Robby Snelling (#39). For the sake of this series, we’ll focus on the former.

White is considered the top left-handed pitching prospect in baseball. He is 6’5″ with a fastball that reaches 99 MPH, a wipeout slider, and a changeup that’s improved year-over-year. In 2025, he posted a 2.31 ERA in 21 starts across 3 levels in the Marlins system, including racking up 145 strikeouts in just 89.2 innings.

I’ve seen comparisons to Cy Young winner Blake Snell, and I see it. His stuff is similarly electric. However, White has an easier delivery than Snell, making it easy for his 98 mile an hour heater sneak up on hitters. His delivery reminds me much more of Jordan Montgomery, but with much higher velocity.

White’s one big question mark is his control. He sometimes struggles with command, posting an 11.7% career walk rate with a BB/9 of 4.5. Even with the walks, he compliments it with 12.9 K/9. If he can cut down on the free passes, the tall lefty could be lethal as a future number one. Four of Miami’s top five prospects are expected to debut for the big league club sometime in 2026, so the future is looking bright in South Beach.
