Charlie Condon is a primary first baseman who is 6’6″ with tremendous raw power. But he’s got holes in his swing, is uneven defensively, and hasn’t been the same since being drafted, in large part due to injuries. Condon is expected to improve his tools before reaching Coors, and his raw power will obviously play well in Mile High, so at least his arrival could give the Rockies something to get excited about.
So far in Spring Training, Condon looks healthy and is putting up the numbers that could land him in Denver sooner rather than later. In 14 spring at-bats so far, Condon is hitting .500 with 3 home runs, including a 115.3 mph blast against the Kansas City Royals.
The three strikeouts equate to roughly a 20% strikeout rate. Condon is profiling like a true three outcome guy, but to be a true difference maker, he needs to cut down on the Ks.
Condon, along with other top prospects Kyle Karros and Cole Carrigg are having excellent starts to spring, so by building around them, maybe the Rockies are in the early stages of what the Athletics and White Sox are doing: finding a young, energetic core to build around.
Condon is an average defender, so a potential move to the DH spot is not out of the question, but in his college career, Condon was very versatile, playing all over the outfield and at third base. Given all the needs that the Rockies have, Condon has the defensive experience to fit in wherever he’s needed.
Charlie Condon’s closest comp is probably most similar to someone like Rhys Hoskins: big power with question marks when it comes to contact and defense.
