The Guardians’ farm system is loaded with talent. I elected not to choose Cleveland’s top two prospects Travis Bazzana and Chase DeLauter for an opportunity to highlight a lesser-known prospect. So, for the purpose of this blog series, I’m going to center on 21-year-old shortstop Angel Genao.

Genao is a switch hitter with a quick, compact swing that allows him to get to the ball no matter where it’s pitched. His flat swing lends itself to a contact-first approach that will likely keep him to no more than 12-15 homers a year. His .291 career average in the minors would project him well at the top of the Guardians lineup, right between Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez, allowing the latter plenty of RBI opportunities behind the two on-base machines.

Genao is a slightly above average defender with plus range and arm strength, but will be looking to increase his consistency with more reps.

Genao comps most closely to former Guardian second baseman Andres Gimenez, though Genao has a better bat.

All three of Cleveland’s top prospects: Bazzana, DeLauter, and Genao are projected to debut in Cleveland in 2026, with DeLauter already showing up on the Postseason stage in the Wild Card series against the Detroit Tigers. The Guardians won the Central despite having one of the worst offenses in baseball, so adding high on-base guys like former #1 overall pick Bazzana and Genao with the lefty power of DeLauter, to a lineup that already has Bo Naylor and perennial MVP candidate Jose Ramirez, and that once woeful offense could potentially lead Cleveland on a deep run in October.
